Laughlin Lodge at Crystal Lake is a rustic, but comfortable retreat, two miles from the nearest neighbor.  It is situated on top of a mountain, overlooking beautiful seven-acre Crystal Lake and surrounded by forests.  The lodge was built around the turn-of-the-century as a hunting lodge and later became the mountain retreat of steel heiress Bessie M. Laughlin.  Its original name, "Bena Lodge," after the Indian name for ruffed grouse, is found on the handmade door plate.  Deer, grouse, wild turkey, and other wildlife still abound in the surrounding forests where you will find peaceful solitude, and a welcome change from the everyday world.  Come, enjoy the spectacular fall colors, the breathtaking beauty of winter, and the return of spring to the forest climaxed by the gorgeous Mountain Laurel in bloom.

Laughlin Lodge is an interesting and cozy place to stay while enjoying the many activities available in our 960 acre woodland paradise.  You can hike, jog, bike, or ski the 25 miles of mountain trails, ranging from 1,550 to 2,100 foot elevations.  You can enjoy tennis, canoeing, rowing, fishing, sailing, basketball, volleyball, archery, mountain biking, hiking, bird watching, rock climbing, and cross-country skiing.  Our high elements ropes course also offers a challenging experience.

Laughlin Lodge will accommodate up to 15 people in 6 bedrooms upstairs.  There are two complete bathrooms upstairs and two half-baths downstairs.  The bedrooms are decorated with antiques, each with its own delightful character and charm.  You can book the entire lodge for a group of your family and friends, or reserve just one or more rooms.  You can prepare your own meals in the lodge kitchen, or partake of the hearty, delicious meals served in our central dining hall at the other end of Crystal Lake.

The fireplace of native stone invites all to gather in the large living room to share the day's activities, play games and tell stories.  Several walls are lined with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves filled with fascinating volumes for you to enjoy reading by the fire.  There are cabinets of games and puzzles, an antique piano and a reed organ.  The deer are often seen by the apple tree outside the Lodge or on the shore of the lake.  Guests also enjoy watching the beaver swim around the lake in the evening.

Additional lodging and dining facilites are available for up tp 200 guests in nearby heated cottages and our modern, fully winterized dining hall.  We have facilities for clubs, business organizations and other groups to hold conferences as well as for family reunions, weddings, and church retreats.
